Q&A with Jessica Inclán

1.   What emerging trends in romance publishing are you hearing about?

Interestingly and ironically, the trends that seem to be the fastest growing are the paranormal (vampires and magic), more "erotic" stories, and the gentler "Christian" stories. There is sort of a building up at both ends of the continuum.

2.   What made you choose to specifically write a paranormal romance?

I personally found it to be the most interesting. I love a wonderful romance, but I was very interested in creating a world, learning a kind of magic, and coming up with the history of an entire group of people. I am also really besotted by Harry Potter, Philip Pullman’s novels, and quantum physics. I think many writers enjoy teaming something with romance –historical romance, Christian romance, etc. That way, as a writer, you can work with other ideas or themes you enjoy.

3.   Do you plan on going in any other direction besides paranormal romance with your future works?

I am writing a contemporary novel right now, but I do have plans to write another trilogy of romance novels. I just have to create the world - the magic world. I want to leave behind the world of Les Croyants des Trois and see what else can happen.

4.   You mentioned that you researched quantum physics for the novel. How did you do that? Can you elaborate on any other special kinds of research you did while preparing to write “WHEN YOU BELIEVE?”

My magic characters have the ability to travel through space. Quantum physics suggests that there is the possibility that you and I, right now, could sink our hands through the wall. We are all made up of atoms, and we are all in the same energy field. Since we are "one," we should be able to move with the energy all around us. It sounds weird – and that's why the idea is in the realm of theoretical physics. But I needed that information to get my characters from here to there.

I also did a great deal of research on France, and the French, because that's where my magic people set up shop as a culture. The third romance in this trilogy is set in Paris – and horrors! I ended up having to spend three weeks there last summer.

5.   You read over 100 romance novels the summer before writing “WHEN YOU BELIEVE.” What was that like?

It was like being in a dream. Everything tended to work out all right for all the characters, and sometimes it was difficult to remember that things wouldn't just snap to like that in my real life.

6.   In addition to being an author, you are also a professor. Do your students know that you write romance novels, and how do they react? Do they read them?

My romances haven't started coming out yet, but they have read my other novels. They are young (18-22) and most aren't unduly impressed with the fact that I have six published novels out in the world. However, some are, and want to talk to me a lot about the process of writing and publishing.

7.   What’s your next project?

I'm working on a novel titled Loneliness Night Out, a story about four women who get together once a month for an adventure. So far, it's been a great one!
